Originally described in the genus Pipistrellus , it was placed in the subgenus Arielulus by Hill and Harrison (1987), a name which Csorba and Lee (1999) subsequently elevated to generic rank.	20000000	Arielulus societatis	Least Concern 2020	2020-09-30 00:00:00 UTC	3.1	English	Listed as Least Concern, based on insufficient data to indicate that it qualifies in a higher threat category.	This species has been found in both primary and disturbed lowland and low hill forest at a number of localities, ranging from sea level to 400m above sea level, although it may occur at higher altitudes. It has also been caught in peat swamp forest. Most records are from near streams, with individuals generally being caught in mist nets set across small streams or rivers. However, it is likely that the species forages more widely in or above forest canopy, where it would be difficult to capture. Kingston et al. (2006) report that an individual was found roosting in a tree hole near a stream in Selangor, though the precise locality of that record was not provided.	Logging, agriculture, tree plantations, especially oil palm and rubber and forest fires leading to loss of lowland forest are likely the main threats to this species.	No estimates are available of the population size. The species has rarely been caught, but this may reflect mainly low capture probabilities, except at times when it comes low to the ground over rivers and streams.	Decreasing	The species is known from Peninsular Malaysia and peninsular Thailand. ; Reported distributional records include the following localities in Malaysia: (type locality) lowland rainforest at Gunung Benom base camp (3° 51' N, 102° 11' E, 250m asl; Hill 1972); regenerating hilly lowland forest near Fraser’s Hill, Selangor (3° 37' N, 101° 44' E, altitude 400m; Mohd-Hanif et al. 2015); disturbed hilly lowland forest at Ulu Gombak field station, Selangor (3° 19' N, 101° 45' E, 250m asl; Heller and Volleth 1984); lowland peatswamp forest at Sungai Bebar, Pekan forest reserve, Pahang (3° 15' N, 103° 20' E, 40m asl; Shukor et al. 2005). ; It has also been found at two localities in Thailand: lowland forest at Sirindhorn waterfall, Hala Bala Wildlife Sanctuary, Narathiwat (5° 48' N, 101° 49' E, 160m asl; Karapan et al. 2016); lowland forest in Khao Nam Khang National Park, Songkhla (6° 36' N, 100° 35' E, 120m asl) (Pipat Soisook and Charles M Francis, unpublished data). Likely it occurs in suitable patches of lowland forest throughout the Malay peninsula. Terrestrial	This species has been reported from a number of protected areas including Krau Wildlife Reserve, Khao Nam Khang Wildlife Sanctuary and Hala Bala Wildlife Sanctuary. Further research is needed to determine the true range, population status and ecology of this species.	Indomalayan FALSE	FALSE	Global	Simmons, N. B., & Cirranello, A. L. (2023).
