Normally inhabits mines, but can be found in houses. In the vicinity of Santiago (central Chile), the species is found in rock crevices and under roofs of houses (Mann 1978). This species usually occurs at medium elevations, as compared to other members of the genus.	No major threats throughout its range.	It is relatively common in Chile, but seems uncommon in Argentina. According to Mann (1978), H. macrotus is usually solitary and relatively uncommon in central Chile, but farther north, however, especially near agricultural fields, this same author reported colonies numbering in the hundreds, if not thousands, roosting in abandoned mines in the Province of Chañaral.	Unknown	The species is known from Chile, Argentina, and Paraguay (Simmons 2005, Lopez-Gonzalez et al . 1998). A record from Peru is published (Aragon and Aguirre 2014) but the photograph does not correspond to that species (Barquez, pers. comm.).
