Although the core of its distribution is dependent upon a highly fragile habitat (southern montane forests, or Yungas), current population decline due to human population density and habitat transformation does not reach the threshold (>30% over ten years) to qualify as threatened under criterion A2c.	This species is found in the interior of forests, but records from southern Peru and northern Chile (Rodríguez-San Pedro et al . 2016) include arid formations. It is usually found using buildings and tree hollows as diurnal roosts. Barquez et al . (1999) recorded the use of an artificial diurnal roost by H. laephotis , as well as the cohabitation of this species with other bat species (Tadarida brasiliensis and Myotis sp). This type of behavior (sharing roost) tends to occur among all species in Histiotus (Miranda et al. 2007). As with other species in the genus, it is mostly insectivorous.	The species shows a wide distribution, but at the Yungas formations (montane forests in S Peru, S Bolivia and N Argentina) it may face some risks because of high rates of deforestation by changes in land use.	It is locally not abundant throughout its geographic distribution; usually rare. Few specimens and records are available.	Decreasing	The species is present in Argentina, south of Bolivia, and south of Peru (Simmons 2005, Handley and Gardner 2008). There are records from Paraguay (López-González et al . 1998), and Chile (Rodríguez-San Pedro et al . 2016). It has been recorded at an Araucaria pine forest in the State of Santa Catarina, Southern Brazil (Miranda et al . 2009).
