Intemarial septum is swollen and partially covering the nares. Ears are separate, and relatively large. Fur is fine and short, gray-brown dorsally and slightly lighter ventrally.	Tropical forest in lowland and hilly situations.	Exact diet of Aellen’s Leaf-nosed Bat is not known, but it is insectivorous.	No information.	Aellen’s Leaf-nosed Bat rests up in caves and old mine adits. Echolocation call includes a F component at 146 kHz.	Aellen’s Leaf-nosed Bat roosts singly or in small groups, typically consisting of 2-6 individuals. It may share its roost with other species of Hipposideros .	Classified as Vulnerable on The IUCNRed List due to its small, fragmented distribution, which is under threat of deforestation. Disturbance ofits cave roosting sites is another threat. The species' extent of occurrence (EOO), area of occupancy (AOO), and habitat is projected to continue to decline ;due to continuing threats from forest loss and degradation and cave/mine loss, degradation, and disturbance.	The natural history of this species is not well known. In general,it may be found in both drier and wetter types of lowland and sub-montane rainforest (Fahr 2013). Roost sites include natural caves, boulder caves, overhanging cliffs, and disused mine adits (Monadjem et al. 2013, 2016).	The species is threatened by general deforestation, mining operations on Mount Nimba, the disturbance of roosting caves, and the loss of old mine adits to ongoing mining operations. Due to its small size it is unlikely to harvested for food. Disturbance at roost sites are also likely to be significant threats to this species (Fahr 2013). This species also occurs in areas of high population density, so persecution and human-bat conflict likely to be a significant threat.	This is generally considered to be a very rare species, occurring in low numbers. For example, at Mount Nimba, an old mine adit was occupied by five adult Hipposideros marisae compared with about 200 H. cf. ruber . In a neighbouring adit there were a further two H. marisae and over 50 ;H. ;cf. ;ruber (A. Monadjem, 2016). The global population is suspected to have declined in the past and will continue to decline due to loss and degradation of the species habitat, especially the loss of cave and mine roosts.	Decreasing	This West African species has been recorded from seven localities in Guinea, Liberia (central and western uplands), and Côte d'Ivoire. It also occurs in the Gola Forest in eastern Sierra Leone. It may also occur in Ghana, however, there are no records from this country (Grubb et al. 1998). It is a lowland species generally recorded between sea level and 650 m asl. However, it has been recorded roosting in old mine adits at 720 m and 920 m asl adjacent to Mount Nimba (Monadjem et al. 2013, Monadjem 2016). Terrestrial	This species is endemic to Africa, and found within the Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve World Heritage Site in Guinea as well as the East Nimba Nature Reserve in Liberia, and Gola Forest in Sierra Leone. There is a need to protect important roost sites and areas of suitable forest habitat. Further studies are needed into the distribution, population size and trend, ecology and significant threats to this species. Given the extensive mining, logging and agricultural expansion and potential cave disturbance in the area it is also recommended to engage key stakeholders and work with local communities and government authorities given they have an endemic rare species in the area. Specific research is needed to understand disturbance and if protection or gating of important maternity roosts is viable.	Afrotropical FALSE	FALSE	Global	Simmons, N. B., & Cirranello, A. L. (2023).
