The Ziama Horseshoe Bat is one of the largest horseshoe bats in Africa. Dorsal pelage is buffy brown (hairs are pale buff basally and pale brown at tips); venter is paler dirty buff, with pale brown sheen. There is no known orange morph. Males lack axillary tufts. Ears are very long (39-63% of forearm length), with 11—12 internal folds and very large antitragus. Noseleaf has long and narrow subtriangular lancet, with nearly parallel sides distally and rounded tip; connecting process is largely reduced, low, and concave, leaving large depression between sella and lancet; sella is inclined forward, with nearly parallel sides and enlarged lobes at base, forming heart-shaped, corolla-like cup; nostrils are bordered laterally by raised and nearly straight rims that almost reach anterior margin of horseshoe; and horseshoe is of medium width at 11- 5 mm , almost covers muzzle, and has no lateral leaflets and inconspicuous or absent median emarginadon. Lower lip has one medial groove. Wings and uropatagium are dark gray. Skull is large and slender, with weak zygomatic arches that are dorsally notched (zygomatic width is subequal to mastoid width); nasal swellings are high domed, with roughly heart-shaped chambers in dorsal view; frontal depression is very deep; sagittal crest is moderately developed anteriorly and poorly developed posteriorly; infraorbital bridge is very elongated and slender; and interpterygoid groove is very deep. P2 is small and in tooth row, separating C1 and P4; P3 is small and slightly to completely displaced labially; and P2 and P4 are in contact or separate. Other similar species include R. ruwenzorii and R. hilli .	20000000	Rhinolophus ziama	Endangered	B2ab(iii)	2020	2019-06-21 00:00:00 UTC	3.1	English	This species is listed as Endangered under criterion B2ab(iii) as it is only known from three locations in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone where its area of occupancy (AOO) is 150-300 km². The global population for this species is projected to continue to decline as the quality, area, and extent of its forest and cave habitats continues to be lost and/or degraded.	This species is endemic to West Africa and appears to be restricted to Afromontane-Afroalpine and lowland tropical moist forest (rainforest) of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone (Fahr 2013, Decher 2010). The Guinea specimens were captured in a secondary forest close to primary forest, while the Liberian specimen was captured in upland "undisturbed High Forest" (Fahr et al. 2002). The Sierra Leone specimen was captured in riparian forest in the transition zone between forest and savanna (Decher et al. 2010). The day roosts of this species are not known, although it is suspected to roost as small colonies in caves, mine shafts and similar habitats based on assumed similarities with Rhinolophus maclaudi (Fahr et al. 2002, Happold 2013).	The species is threatened by past and continued deforestation of its roosts and foraging habitats, largely through logging and mining operations as well as inundation of forest for the generation of hydro-electric power, and conversion of land to agricultural use. It is also considered possible that the species could be threatened by overharvesting for subsistence food in the future (Happold 2013).	This species is known only from five specimens (Fahr et al. 2002, Decher et al. 2010). The global population is thought to be declining due to ongoing loss and degradation of forests and cave/mine habitats.	Decreasing	This West African bat is known from three (3) locations: one each in southeast Guinea, northwest Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Two of the locations are in the Guinea Highlands (ca 600 m asl) of southeast Guinea (Ziama Forest) and north-west Liberia (Wonegizi Mountains) (Fahr et al. 2002). The third location in Sierra Leone is in the upper Seli valley (Decher et al. 2010). Although surrounding areas have been surveyed for the species, such as at Mount Simandou, Mount Nimba, and the Gola Forest, it remains undetected (Fahr et al. 2006, Decher 2015, Denys et al. 2013, Monadjem et al. 2016). Terrestrial	It is not known if the species is present in any protected areas. There is a need to protect suitable areas of forest habitat for this species, and to initiate appropriate bat conservation awareness programmes among local people. In addition, further studies are needed into the distribution, abundance, natural history, and threats to this species.	Afrotropical FALSE	FALSE	Global	Simmons, N. B., & Cirranello, A. L. (2023).
