There is no accurate information on population size or trends, and the extent of occurrence and area of occupancy are poorly understood. There have been no confirmed records in the last 20 years. As there has been no targeted study of this species to date, it is likely that more intensive collecting across southern coastal New Guinea will show that this species is more common and widespread than the current records show. Isolated populations may also occur. This species is best treated as Data Deficient because of the small number of records (35), with none since 1995, and because there is no information on population size and extent, and significant threatening processes.	<p><span lang="EN-AU">This species has been recorded from tropical lowland forest and open sclerophyll woodland. ;A series collected from near Port Moresby were found in a tree hollow (Flannery 1995), while Bonaccorso (1998) states that it is “house-dwelling” ;</p>	<span lang="EN-AU">No major threats to this species have been yet identified.	Population size is not known. Only a total of 35 specimens have been recorded, all prior to 1995. May be abundant, as Bonaccorso (1998) states it is present “throughout the tiny National Capital District”.	Stable	This little-known species has been recorded from disparate localities in southern coastal areas of Papua New Guinea. It was first collected and described in 1892 from the Kamali and Aroma villages 90 km and 120 km south-east of the capital Port Moresby. ; Several records are from the National Capital District, most of which were collected in 1952, with others in 1968, 1984 and 1993, and a record from Aroa River, 60 km north-west of Port Moresby (Bonaccorso 1998). All records range from sea level to 100 m asl, and known extent of occurrence is 3881 km2. Very few targeted or systematic surveys for bats using modern acoustic recording techniques have been conducted in these habitats, and there has been no confirmation of this species elsewhere in lowland areas (K.N. Armstrong unpublished data).
