For discussion of synonyms see Koopman (1975, 1992), Van Cakenberghe and De Vree (1985), and Kock (1969a). Does not include madagascariensis; see Peterson et al. (1995). Does not include vinsoni; see Van Cakenberghe and De Vree (1998). See Taylor (2000a) for distribution map.; [HMW] Nycteris macrotis Dobson, 1876 , Sierra Leone . Nycteris macrotis belongs to the macrotis group. Taxon vinsoni, previously classified as a distinct species, is considered here conspecific with N. macrotis . Some confusion exists over taxonomic relationships in this group, and several subspecies have been described but none clearly delineated. Taxonomic relationships of West African and East African populations need to be investigated; they might represent cryptic species. Nycteris macrotis needs urgent revision and might change with future studies. Monotypic.; [batnames2022] macrotis species group. Includes madagascarensis as a synonym; see Demos et al. 2021. For chromosome morphology see Volleth et al. (2019).; [MDD2022] includes vinsoni and madagascariensis; vinsoni was listed as a synonym of N. macrotis without reason in HMW9, although the distinction of the species goes back and forth and we follow HMW9 tentatively; [IUCN] N. vinsoni , which was in the 1996 Red List, was included as a synonym under this (D. Kock pers. comm.) in 2000, but then resurrected again as a good species in 2004. It is also considered by some to be a ssp. of macrotis . N. macrotis is possibly a species complex - the west African form appears smaller (W. Cotterill pers. comm.).; [batnames2023] macrotis species group. Includes madagascarensis as a synonym; see Demos et al. 2021. Includes vinsoni Dalquest, 1965 as a synonym of macrotis oriana ; see Koopman (1993) and Mondjem at al. (2020). Widely distributed in tropical Africa from Senegal in W to Sudan , Ethiopia , Somalia , Kenya , and Tanzania (including Unguja I in Zanzibar Archipelago) in the E, S to NW Angola , S DR Congo , NE Botswana , N Zimbabwe , and C Mozambique .	Head-body 60-70 mm, tail 45-65 mm, ear 27-34 mm, hindfoot 10-14 mm, forearm 40-55 mm; weight 15-18 g. The Large-eared Slit-faced Batis small, with short rounded wings. Longitudinal cleft runs along top of muzzle, covering noseleaves. Fur is long and fluffy, pale reddish brown to grayish brown dorsally, and slightly lighter ventrally. Orange morph also exists that is bright orange dorsally and ventrally. Ears are very long. Wing membranes are dark brown and free of hairs. There are obvious sexual differences in pelage. Chromosomal complement has 2n = 40 and FNa = 74 in Somalia . Echolocation call is multiharmonic and involves a steep FM sweep with peak frequencies at 29 kHz, 49 kHz, 70 kHz, and 89 kHz.	Wide variety of tropical savanna and forest habitats including miombo woodland with Isoberlinia and Brachystegia (both Fabaceae ), lowland rainforest, coastal forest, forest-savanna mosaic, riverine forest, and grassland savanna from sea level to elevations of ¢. 2200 m .	The Large-eared Slitfaced Bat eats various insects including orthopterans, beetles, and termites.	In Malawi and Tanzania , there is some evidence suggesting two birth peaks of Large-eared Slitfaced Bats during the year, but this requires confirmation. Litter size is one.	The Large-eared Slitfaced Bat roosts during the day in sheltered structures including hollow trees, caves, road culverts, and abandoned buildings.	The Large-eared Slitfaced Bat roosts singly or in small groups, but one roost in Senegal had ¢.100 individuals. Kock pers. comm.) in 2000, but then resurrected again as a good species in 2004. It is also considered by some to be a ssp. of macrotis . N. macrotis is possibly a species complex - the west African form appears smaller (W. Cotterill pers. comm.).	20000000	Nycteris macrotis	Least Concern 2017	2016-08-31 00:00:00 UTC	3.1	English	Listed as Least Concern in view of its wide distribution, presumed large population, and because it is unlikely to be declining fast enough to qualify for listing in a more threatened category	This species has been recorded from a variety of habitats, ranging from lowland tropical moist forest into both moist and dry savanna. While it most often roosts in hollow trees, it has also been recorded roosting in small caves and in thatched house roofs. In the Parc National du ‘W’ in Niger Republic, 300 km west of Sokoto, they have been found roosting in groups of 10-20 individuals in thatched huts and others were found in abandoned mine shafts (Poché, 1975). Happold (1987), notes that they are solitary or live in small groups.	In general there are no major threats to this species. In parts of its range it is threatened by general habitat loss, presumably mostly through the conversion of land to agricultural use.	This is a very common species. In southern Africa, colonies are small, typically consisting of fewer than 10 animals.	Unknown	This widespread African species ranges from Senegal in the west, to Somalia in the east, being recorded as far south as northern Botswana. It has been recorded between sea level and 2,200 m Asl. Terrestrial	In view of the species wide range it is presumably present in some protected areas (it has been found in at least one, i.e. Parc National du ‘W’ [Poché, 1975]). No direct conservation measures are currently needed for this species as a whole.	Afrotropical FALSE	FALSE	Global	Simmons, N. B., & Cirranello, A. L. (2023).
